SOYA Yoga Teacher Training: Schedule and Location

The RYS500 SOYA Teacher Training Program is a two year, part-time program. Although September and January are always ideal times to start the program, students can begin throughout the year.

RYS500 for aspiring teachers

All students completing the RYS500 SOYA Teacher Training Program in North Vancouver attend 8 hour teacher training meetings once a month throughout the duration of the program. These meetings are generally held on the first, non-holiday Sunday of the month from 8:30am – 4:30pm. They include detailed hatha yoga instruction and practice, teaching methodology and practice teaching as well as review and discussion of the written assignments. Students also attend courses in Anatomy and Physiology, First Aid and CPR and workshops with SOYA director Mugs McConnel, which are scheduled throughout the two year program at an additional expense.

In addition, all students complete a 19- to 20-hour Practicum under the guidance of Primary and Independent SOYA Faculty and 10 hours practicum teaching on your own. All RYS500 students attend Hatha Yoga classes and workshops for Teachers and Teachers in Training, with Independent SOYA Faculty for a total of 166 hours (including RYT200 hours above, the SOYA Conference hours, and Practicum hours). This is approximately 7 hours a month over a 2 year course. Applicable fees are paid to the Independent SOYA Faculty of your choice. In scheduling and completing these workshops, students discover and embrace their unique yoga path, and pursue studies in their area of interest as they complete a Specialized Yoga Project in an approved topic of choice. This final thesis requires an additional 9 hours of study with an Independent SOYA Faculty member who has the skills related to your area of specialty and includes Practicum teaching, understanding the Anatomy related to the topic, and methods of how to teach this specialized group.  Any applicable fees for Practicum and relevant workshop hours are paid to the Independent SOYA Faculty of your choice.

RYS300upgrade for RYT200 Teachers

All students completing the RYS300 SOYA Yoga Teacher Training Program in North Vancouver attend regular Sunday meetings, complete lesson plans and a comprehensive specialty project RYS 300 upgrade students take additional classes, workshops and practical training in their area of specialty. The hours required are determined individually to take into account the upgrading teacher’s previous training in order to ensure that RYS500 standards are met and/or exceeded.
