RYS500 Yoga Teacher Training Program Outline. The hours outlined below include attendance at two annual Yoga Conferences
Hatha Yoga Techniques
200 hours of asana instruction including:
* Traditional Asanas, with and without props
* Modifications in yoga for specialized areas, eg: seniors, children, injuries
* Exploration of various styles of yoga (Iyengar, Sivananda, Ashtanga, etc)
* Traditional Pranayama techniques from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika
* Kriyas and their practical use today
* Chanting, meditation, visualization and relaxation
* Researching and writing a “thesis” document on a Specialized topic in yoga, such as Yoga for Pregnancy, Yoga for Seniors, Yoga for Teens, etc. A copy of your research is donated to the SOYA Library for the benefit of all teachers
Yoga Philosophy
163 hours of guided study and homework in required texts
* Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (Raja Yoga)
* The Bhagavad Gita (Karma and Bhakti Yoga)
* The Upanishads (Jnana Yoga)
* The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Hatha Yoga)
* Chakra, Kriyas, Koshas, Mudras and Bandhas
Anatomy
63 hours of anatomy including applying the principles of Anatomy to Yoga
* Current Emergency First Aid and CPR certification
* Bodily Systems (muscular, endocrine, skeletal, nervous, respiratory)
* Anatomy of Movement (adduction, abduction, flexion, extension, etc)
* Anatomy as it relates to Ayurveda, Kriyas, Pregnancy and Meditation
* Anatomy as it relates to Asanas, Pranayama, Chakras, Nadis, Koshas
* Anatomy as it relates to your Specialty Project
Teaching Methodology
115 hours including
* Creating 10 Lesson Plans with benefits, cautions, modifications, progressions
* Modifications of asanas according to Health Survey/Waiver
* Professionalism and ethics for Yoga Teachers
* Demonstrating postures effectively
* Assisting and correcting postures with and without touching students
* Learning how to WATCH your students to prevent injury
* Teaching methodology as it relates to your Specialty Project
Practicum
79 hours of apprenticeship teaching, with Teachers and independently
* Putting your lesson plans to use
* Applying learned techniques in a real class setting
* Applying learned techniques with your Specialty Project in a real class setting
Examination
(Preparation, writing and presenting)
* Practical Exam: Organizing and presenting a 2 hour workshop on a preapproved topic (can be on the topic of your Specialty)
* Written Exam: closed book exam with 3 hours time provided to write
